One terrifying but very intriguing tale is the legend of the doppelgänger. Legend has it that human beings are made into two beings: one has a good spirit while the other is evil. If you are considered the good person, the other is the evil one. It is said that they become trapped when there is a glitch in the space-time continuum. The term doppelgänger originated in Germany and means double walker or paranormal double of a living person. Some believe their appearance is a forecast of sudden tragedy or approaching death.
Sightings have reported the appearance of two people at the same time. In some cases, only the owner of the doppelgänger can see them but occurrences of other people seeing doppelgangers have been reported. The often-shadowy image is known to mimic the exact movements of its living counterpart.
Stories date as far back as 1845, when Julie von Güldenstubbe, a student at Pensionat von Neuwelcke in modern day Latvia had a doppelgänger who was visible by the entire class although von Güldenstubbe had never seen the apparition herself. She reported feeling drained and was very pale when the doppelgänger appeared in front of students and teachers at the school.
Scientists have tried to explain its existence by disrupting the left temporoparietal junction, which is responsible for self-image. Doing this has resulted to similar occurrences of a doppelgänger-like image. Studies have so far not yet explained how this frightening image can be seen by multiple people at the same time.
